This weekly data report tracks publicly confirmed wallet-security incidents and their direct losses for September 7–13, 2026. Figures come from protocol disclosures, security-firm analyses and on-chain investigators; where a number is an estimate or partly frozen, we say so. Indirect costs — token price effects, lost uptime, unrecovered amounts in ongoing investigations — are not included.

This edition covers September 7–13, 2026.

After a week distorted by the Liquid Network withdrawal, the incident ledger returned to a small, unglamorous size: roughly $3.7M compromised across four confirmed incidents, or about $1.9M net once frozen and recovered assets are set against them. The week's defining number was not a loss at all — 3,400 BTC, about $269M, returned to the Liquid federation wallet on September 7, restoring most of the backing that had disappeared on September 6. Roughly 598.5 BTC (about $47M at the week's prevailing bitcoin price near $77,700) remains with the actors from that incident, and the network itself was still paused at the edition cutoff while a chain split was resolved and a restart coordinated.

2. Incident Ledger

Sep 8Balancer V1 (deadline)Cooperation deadline lapsed; escalation committed$234k (stolen Aug 31)Unresolved
Key point: The single most important number for the coming weeks: roughly 598.5 BTC — about $47M at the week's prevailing price — from the Liquid withdrawal remains at actor-controlled addresses, with no published agreement on its status. Every other incident this week combined is smaller than that outstanding balance.

3. Attack-Type Distribution

Share of the week's ~$3.7M in compromised funds:

Attack typeAmountShareIncident
Bridge/wrapper accounting (double-spend)$3.15M≈84%Nomic forwarding flaw; 22.65 BTC of it frozen
Unauthorized bridge mint (realized)~$336k≈9%Symbiosis BridgeV2; liquidity-capped exit
Protocol reserve compromise~$143k≈4%Zentra ctUSD reserve, Citrea
Streaming-payment safeguard bypass~$107k≈3%Superfluid Celo bug hitting GoodDollar reserves

One hundred percent of this week's compromised value sits in accounting and issuance logic — not one incident involved a stolen key, a phished seed phrase or a signed malicious approval. That is unusual even for a quiet week, and it reinforces the wrapper-layer pattern described in our weekly review: the receipt-issuing software around bitcoin is currently the most reliably broken layer in the stack.

4. Four-Week Comparison

WeekTracked direct lossesDefining event
Aug 17–23~$12.3MMaya Protocol and Term Finance exploits
Aug 24–30~$7.7MCosmos EVM bug ($5.72M post-mortem)
Aug 31–Sep 6~$321.8M grossLiquid Network withdrawal (~$269M of it returned Sep 7)
Sep 7–13~$1.9M net (~$3.7M gross)Wrapper unbackings at Nomic and Symbiosis; 3,400 BTC returned

The four-week sequence reads ~$12.3M, ~$7.7M, ~$321.8M, ~$1.9M net — but the honest comparison excludes the Liquid distortion: against the prior week's ex-Liquid figure of roughly $1.8M, this week's ~$1.9M net is essentially flat. The market's real baseline since late August sits near $2M per week of confirmed direct losses, with single mid-sized protocol bugs capable of moving that number by an order of magnitude in either direction.

5. Recovery Ledger

6. What We Count, and What We Do Not

Counting scope is explicit in the report: only publicly disclosed incidents with confirmed direct losses are included, and frozen or recovered assets are shown against gross figures rather than assumed recovered. Some events reported this week are not counted as confirmed losses — for example, the external G$ liquidity-pool losses in the GoodDollar incident remain undisclosed, and the Zentra exploit method is unpublished, so its figure rests on the protocol's own estimate. Prior-week events, including the original Liquid withdrawal and the Balancer V1 theft, appear only where an in-window development (the return, the deadline) moved their status.

As always: if a figure in this report is later shown to be materially different from the initial disclosure, we will correct it in the next edition and note the change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much was lost in the week of September 7–13, 2026?

Roughly $3.7M in confirmed direct losses across four incidents — Nomic/Osmosis ($3.15M compromised), Symbiosis (~$336k realized), Zentra (~$143k) and GoodDollar (~$107k). Net of the 22.65 BTC frozen in the Nomic attacker's address, tracked losses are about $1.9M.

Did the Liquid Network return change last week's numbers?

No. The withdrawal belongs to the September 6 window, so last week's gross figure stands, and the September 7 return falls in this week's window. On a running basis, the incident's outstanding amount fell from roughly $320M to about $47M — 598.5 BTC — with the bridge still paused at the edition cutoff.

Why is the Nomic/Osmosis figure a range?

Because part of it is frozen, not lost. Attackers injected 39.84 fake nBTC (about $3.15M) into Osmosis's allBTC, but an emergency upgrade locked 22.65 BTC in the attacker's address before it moved, and Osmosis plans a governance vote to seize it. The realized gap is about 17.19 BTC (roughly $1.3M), which the community pool is proposed to cover.

What happened with the Balancer V1 exploiter?

Nothing publicly, which is itself the outcome. Balancer's September 3 on-chain notice offered a bounty for returning the ~$234k taken on August 31, with a September 8, 21:00 UTC deadline. No public response was reported by the cutoff, and Balancer committed to technical, on-chain and legal escalation, with the bounty redirected to informants.

Are these totals complete?

No public tally can be. Confirmed, disclosed incidents only are counted; the GoodDollar external-pool losses and the Zentra exploit method are unpublished, so both figures are floors rather than ceilings. Indirect costs — token depegs, downtime, interface outages — are not counted.

Sources & Methodology

This article is based on public data and official disclosures. Figures were last reviewed on September 15, 2026. Values change with network conditions; always verify against the primary source before making decisions.

  1. Liquid Network's own incident report with The Block and Decrypt (September 7-8, 2026): return of 3,400 BTC in block 965,950; roughly 598.5 BTC outstanding.
  2. Osmosis's own governance proposal and freeze notice with Nomic's disclosure and BlockFence's Rarma tracing (September 9–11, 2026): allBTC freeze, 39.84 fake nBTC (~$3.15M), 22.65 BTC frozen, ~17.19 BTC gap.
  3. Symbiosis's own recovery and bounty notices with Blockaid's detection alert (September 11–13, 2026): BridgeV2 exploit, 46.1B syBTC minted, ~$336k realized, 15 BTC recovered, 20% bounty deadline lapse.
  4. Zentra Finance's own post-mortem (September 11, 2026): ctUSD reserve exploit, ~$143k, and the September 14 deadline.
  5. CryptoSlate (September 10, 2026): GoodDollar reserve losses — 86,588 cUSD (Celo) plus ~$20,857 (XDC) via a Superfluid Celo bug.
  6. Balancer's own on-chain notice (September 3, 2026): V1 pool exploit, $234k August 31 loss, September 8 deadline.
  7. CoinGecko market data (September 11, 2026): bitcoin near $77,715 at the time of reporting, used for the BTC conversions in this report.
